University of Kentucky – Shively Track and Field Facility
This project was a renovation of the existing track and field facility by providing new track and field surfaces, field event training areas, spectator seating, spectator amenities (concession, restrooms, etc.) and equipment storage. The track is a nine-lane synthetic surface track.
An “Athletes Only” practice throw area was integrated into the site plan, creating safety for adjacent spectators as well as providing the proper environment for the training and warm-up of student athletes. A practice runway was incorporated with the javelin throw, an area that also accommodates visiting teams during meet events.
The architectural design and materials are integrated to enhance the design elements of the adjacent baseball stadium. The concession building overlooks the track so that spectators standing in line continue to have visual access to the event competition. Additionally, a storage facility was constructed to accommodate all track and field equipment.
